My Students

The excitement and energy our 7th graders bring into the classroom on a daily basis is contagious. They are always ready to learn and willing to teach. Our diverse learning environment allows for exceptional opportunities for collaboration, discussion, and cooperation.

These students are inquisitive, engaged, motivated and empathetic learners.

As educators, we are always looking for learning activities that embrace and challenge our students. I believe this can be accomplished through a literacy focus that allows all students the opportunity to read to learn.

My Project

This novel by Julius Lester was the winner of the 2006 Coretta Scott King Award. Based on historical fact, it tells of the largest slave auction ever held, and its aftermath. Most of the book is told in the form of a script using dialogue and stage directions. These chapters are interspersed with Interludes in which the character recalls and thinks about the events. In Day of Tears, Lester exposes the devastating reality of the slave experience.

It is a riveting reading experience that will bring history to life for our 7th grade students.

This novel will take students into the minds of the slaves and masters as we follow a young girl's journey from slavery to a life of freedom.

The themes presented in this story will also allow students to engage in extension activities that include research projects, readers’ theater, role-playing, and various writing exercises.
