This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We know that getting students to read can be a challenge. There’s no better way of getting the word out about reading than children talking to each other, spreading the news and creating a buzz. We all know that children are influenced by their peers and if a group of children are excited by something and they talk about it, then others will want to try it too.
These books by David Shannon are a big hit in my classroom!
They can't get enough of David, the main character in the story. They can relate to David and it is a K-1 grade reading level so my struggling students can still read it. Each book has simple text, and young readers can picture read and read from memory while matching sight words like “no” on each page. The great thing about the book No David is that it also is a great conversation starter.
I also wanted to include 2 books on the Lunar New Year. It is a tradition not just celebrated in China. I have 2 Vietnamese students who would love to hear about how they celebrate the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. There are many similarities and differences.
