Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are considered low-income and high risk for failure. They come from families who are underprivileged, and most live in poverty. The school provides their supplies and sometimes even their clothes and shoes. Almost all of my students are second-language learners who are not fluent in either language. Most come to school hungry and tired due to poor living conditions. Ninety-five percent of my students are Hispanic and English language learners, and all get free lunch every day. We are considered a Title I school, due to the factors above.

My Project

Many students at my school come to 5th grade as dependent learners; they rely solely on the teacher to give them information and sit in class silently and hesitate to participate or engage in class. Using binders and through data portfolios, students chart pre-tests, set SMART goals, reflect on their progress, chart post-tests, and make action steps if goals are not met OR reflect on their growth if they make progress. Data portfolios put the learning into the students' hands; students take charge of their learning and become confident, independent learners, and risk-takers. They will begin to see themselves as a scholar and develop a growth mindset in the classroom and eventually in other aspects of their life!
