Data Notebooks = Academic Ownership

My students need binders with a plastic cover so that they can use it as a data notebook for the school year. Students will analyze their data and they will make their own goals.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students come from a low socioeconomic status, however they allow themselves to learn the skills that they need in order for them to become successful. Even though our school is considered to be an urban school in the inner city. We provide our students with warm and cozy learning environment.

My students are hard-workers and they like to be acknowledged for their improvements and accomplishments.

My students are very engaged when they can take ownership or their learning. The data notebooks will help my students monitor their academic progress within a project based classroom in third grade for science and social studies.

My students are data thinkers so these data notebooks will allow my students to track their results from assessments. Then my students will make their own goals and they will provide their own recommendation in order for them to meet their own academic goal. My students come from a low income environment where they are not able to afford a lot of their school necessities, however if my students were able to use data notebooks then it would get them one step closer to their goal.

My Project

Students will be able to track their data to see how they have improved within my science and social studies class. Also, parents would be aware of their child's progress within my class. Students will use these binders to help improve in their learning and also it should make them a lot more self aware of their academic needs and goals,.

When we have data meetings at our school, my students are not invited to these meetings.

Therefore, they are not given a voice when it comes to their own learning. Students should be involved when it comes to them knowing their own data because this is a critical component for academic achievement and success.

In my classroom, data notebooks will be used daily so my students can have a voice in their learning, and they can speak on how they will improve their own data. Students will have a direct impact on their learning because they will understand their current academic achievement, they will set goals, and then they will track their progress along the way.

Each student will receive a sturdy binder and a few sheet protectors to organize their goals and protect their data. In the binders, students will keep their progress trackers, tests, and other materials that demonstrate their progress towards a goal. Using these notebooks, students will provide notes on their plans for improving their data. This allows them to have a voice in my teacher data meetings because now I can explain what I will do from a teacher stand point, but I can also speak on how my students will help in this matter of improving academic achievement individually. Using data notebooks I hope will lead them to having an increased amount of knowledge, self-awareness, and a sense of urgency surrounding their goals.
