Data Collection For Math Lab

My students need a Calculator Based Ranger (CBR) to help them collect distance, velocity, and acceleration data that can be directly put into student graphing calculators for their analysis.

Wouldn't it be interesting if you could take a math class where we collected data and used it in class to learn about how math concepts apply to the real world? That is the type of classroom that I endeavor to have. I teach Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Advanced Algebra to high school students. My high school serves a variety of community members, including Navajo and Hopi students (some of whom have to travel up to 90 minutes a day one way to come to school), Hispanic (some of whom are at risk for joining gangs), and a few African-American students. In my Pre-Algebra and Algebra I classes, I teach several students who are in special education.

When I started at this school, I noticed how little technology was available to me as an Algebra teacher. I teach Algebra in an applied setting with as many real-world examples and projects as possible to engage students and help them learn how to solve problems. One tool that I have found to be invaluable in teaching students in Pre-Algebra and Algebra I is the Calculator Based Ranger (CBR) because it allows students to collect real world distance, velocity, and acceleration data for use in modeling. Unfortunately, my school does not have one that works.

I would like to get a CBR unit for my classroom because it can help students see relationships between abstract concepts such as distance, rate, and time. Using this tool, students can learn about functions by being challenged to "walk" a graph, or recreate, through their movements, a graphical representation of a distance, velocity, or acceleration problem. We can also collect data for use in statistical analysis, which is especially useful when we are modeling linear functions and quadratic relationships.

Your donation would allow us to purchase a CBR for use in my classroom. This is a tool that I could use almost daily to help students increase their understanding of abstract Algebra concepts. Students would be able to collect more accurate data that could be uploaded directly into their graphing calculators or displayed directly on an overhead for the class to see. Without this tool, some students will continue to struggle with understanding how some real-world concepts have an application to Algebra.
