DASHing Into Composition

My students need these Dash robots and Xylophones for a new and innovative way students can learn composition, program music, and see it performed by the robots.

My Students

I teach at an elementary school in rural North Carolina. The school is made up primarily of low-income families and is classified as a Title I school.

My students are not as privileged as many other students in the area.

Nonetheless, my school, as the school in the county seat, was blessed to be the pilot school for a 1:1 technology initiative with iPads. I try to make my instruction as innovative as I can to use this technology to benefit my students.

My Project

Composition is always challenging for younger grades because of limitations in both their playing abilities and their music reading knowledge. Students can hear what music they like aesthetically, but they cannot write it down and unfortunately struggle with replicating the music after the initial creation.

I hope to help the process by getting these requested Wonder Workshop Dash Robots and Xyolophones for Dash Robots.

With the Dash robots and xylophones, students will be able to compose music on iPads and then see the robot perform their composition. Lessons will integrate technology as the students are able to learn simple coding on the iPads to write their songs. They can then provide instructions for the Dash robots to move around the room while simultaneously playing the song.
