I teach an inquisitive, motivated group of advanced fourth graders who learn by questioning and creating. Design and innovation are integrated into all we do, and the goal is to provide hands-on experiences so that learning comes to life. Ours is a collaborative classroom where students work together to make sense of the world around them. Through exploration and problem solving, students are better able to understand and make a difference in the world they live in. Learning in our class is an adventure!
My Project
Recently my students participated in the hour of code and they loved it! I was thrilled to see their excitement bubble over into our regular school day. Kids were talking about the code they had written and changes they would make the next time. When I saw the 3M Robotics Challenge, I was inspired to write a project that would bring robotics to my students. I am requesting a Dash and Dot Wonder Pack along with a Samsung Galaxy Tab E tablet to operate the robots. Dash and Dot are an engaging way for students to see the code they write come to life right before their eyes, not just on a computer screen. My students will work in collaborative groups to create challenges for Dash and Dot, and then share those challenges with their classmates. To create the challenges, my students will use apps such as Blocky, which control the movements of the robots. They will learn how to program Dash to play the Xylophone and more.
Marc Andreessen, Co-Founder, and General Partner, Andreessen Horowitz, once said "Learning to code is the single best thing anyone can do to get the most out of the amazing future in front of us.
" Adding Dash and Dot to our curriculum will allow my students to help build this amazing future.
