My Project
As a lover of all literature, I hope that many of my students become lifelong readers themselves. To achieve that, it is my sole duty to introduce them to books that will captivate their hearts. Scythe is a Dystopian Fiction novel by Neal Shusterman; this novel forces you to think about the positive way in which technology could help humanity and how easily a community could be tempted to do wrong. I wholeheartedly believe that this book would help my students with their critical thinking skills and help them envision a world such as the one in the book. I read this book in my free time and I could not put it down; I'm not ashamed to say that I finished it within two days, and I am currently reading book two of the series. As I read it, I couldn't stop thinking about how interested my students would be in reading this book!
My goal for this project is to create a unit that uses the novel as the primary text.
The novel lends itself to teaching about character development, tragic flaws, conflict, tone/mood, and literary devices. The topics discussed in the novel would suit both the ninth-grade and eleventh-grade students I teach.
My students are bright and ready to learn about the world. I often worry that the books that are available to them are too outdated for the kind of world they will be entering as adults. With time and the support of generous donors, I'd like to be able to teach novel study units with books that are both interesting (to modern teenagers) and relevant to the kinds of issues they are facing today.
