Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students and their families are really special. We have a large school, with an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population, and we work hard to create opportunities for our community to get together to share their unique experiences and engage in and celebrate learning.

Because a majority of the families in our school live in poverty, we try to create innovative learning experiences that build our students' repertoire.

We want to offer students at our Title 1 public school the same sorts of experience that students in rich public schools receive. We are focused on social justice and educational equity.

My Project

This project supports the boys in our Two Way Immersion program. The students in the TWI program receive half of their classes are in Spanish and half in English. The purpose of this program is to help our English Learners (whose first language is Spanish) to be able to develop their primary language while acquiring their second language, English. At the same time, primary language English students acquire Spanish. The amazing students in this program celebrate language, culture, diversity, and geography. We want to foster cultural understanding, global awareness, and peace.

A few weeks ago, a group of girls in our program wrote a student-led project for traditional dresses from Jalisco, not it's the boys turn.

While our girls will perform traditional dances in the beautiful dresses, our boys will wear white guayaberas and mariachi bow ties called moños. I am asking for 16 Mariachi bow ties.

In the Two-Way Immersion Program, we integrate social emotional learning into our curriculum. We agree with Weissberg, Durlak, Domitrovich, and Gullotta, authors of the Handbook of Social and Emotional Learning, that Social Emotional Learning helps students develop: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. At our school, we create project based-units that utilize texts that offer students opportunities to discuss their feelings about a variety of issues such as kindness/bullying, violence/non-violence, racism/inclusion and love/hate. We also offer experiences in which students have the opportunity to apply their learning. By dancing folklorico, students learn about their culture (or their friends' culture), and they build relationships by dancing with one another. These middle schoolers have to hold hands, look in each others' eyes, and be aware of their partners as they dance. This is challenging for some, but this developmentally appropriate experience brings our students together and helps them grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Thank you for your support.
