My Project
Most of my students love to move their bodies. Many of them don't have access to dance lessons or performances outside of school time, but in music class, we're able to experience and celebrate all kinds of movement and dance making and love watching videos and reading new books that help us get to know more kinds of ways of moving. I often find it challenging to find enough ways to excite children about moving their whole body more when we dance. When I learned about sensory body socks, I got excited about the creative possibilities that they could offer.
With these sensory body socks, our students will develop a better understanding of their bodies while engaging in dynamic and creative movement.
Students will be able to use these special movement tools as a way of safely explore their personal movement bubbles and become more aware of different ways of moving in relationship with others. The books that I'm requesting will help give us a frame of reference for different ways and reasons people dance and also give us an opportunity to delve into the biases we hold around who can dance and how. I hope that by listening to, reading about and watching different people dance that children will be interested in moving in new ways and think about going beyond their current movement comfort zones .
These sensory socks can double as a calming tool for my neurodiverse children who will benefit from the physical resistance and pressure they provide. I know that these will encourage us to celebrate the diversity in our classrooms that exist beyond race and gender as we discuss mental health and disability justice and learn that we all move together in lots of different and beautiful ways.
