Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Five, six, seven, eight!"
There is never a dull moment in our Dance class. From stretching and jumping to turning and leaping, I help to foster creativity and self-expression in my students.
"Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion." - Martha Graham
My students are anxious and eager to learn.
They watch TV and movies and see the brilliant dancers that are in the entertainment industry. They want to be like those dancers. They are insistent on learning new skills and are always thirsty for more.
My students are in grades six through eight and are predominantly Hispanic. I teach all ability levels and all exceptionalities, because everyone can learn to dance! Many of my students cannot afford to attend classes at a dance studio. Their parents do not have the time or the means to have them take part in such activities. My class provides them the opportunity to get quality dance instruction at their school and at no cost to the families. For many of my students, this is the only opportunity they have to take dance classes and perform in dance shows.
My Project
My students need an iPad mini. We will use the iPad Mini to help with instruction, musical editing and performances.
The students in my program design their performances in all aspects. They choose music, costuming and work on choreography. Having the iPad would allow them to use it as a tool in this process. They would be able to use iTunes and GarageBand to edit their music and create original mixes. They can use the video camera to record rehearsals to make corrections. In iMovie they can create their own edited videos that they could use to advertise performances and to share with the school. It also gives us a way to upload videos to our class site and other shared sites so that students may rehearse at home and not miss any instruction.
At the actual performances, the iPad would allow us to run our music off of a dependable device that will play the music correctly and will not cause interruptions in the show.
My students flourish as dancers but struggle with the lack of technology necessary to make our performances truly professional.
They often have to use outdated software and equipment for their music and it is disheartening when it fails, especially during performances.
Having the iPad for the classroom may not seem like much but would be an excellent tool for the students to delve into every part of they dances they create. A new iPad will help us put on top quality performances for family and friends.
