This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach dance at PS 310 in the Bronx. Last year, thanks to the kindness of a DonorsChoose benefactor who bought my class a television, my classes of Kindergartners through 5th graders studied the Nutcracker. We watched a video of Baryshnikov soaring as he danced the famous role. This year I have decided to put on a production of the Nutcracker (the PS 310 version) for our holiday concert. I have 11 classes involved in this project. I have found a version of the Nutcracker that has lyrics. Some of the 11 classes will be singing. All of the dancing will be done by classes in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. The art teacher and the classroom teachers are all getting together to make some sort of costumes for the performers. However, I would love to have the children actually dance in real ballet slippers. Now I have been having the children dance in their socks. Fun, but slippery! It would be really terrific if I had a supply of ballet slippers in various sizes that the children could wear in class and on stage for the performance. I am asking for all black slippers so that the boys will not be wrongly influenced or intimidated by pink shoes. I have a friend in another school that does have such a supply and after each use, she sprays the inside of each shoe with Lysol to avoid any problems. (sort of like bowling shoes). If I had about 2 classes worth of various sizes (about 60 pairs), one class could be wearing the shoes onstage while another class waits to go on. Then the first class could pass the shoes on to the next performers etc. My budding ballet stars would be so thankful and proud if someone would allow them to soar like Baryshnikov.
