The level of obesity in the United states is outrageous. I am from Louisiana, a state that is near the top of the list for obese states. But, what do you expect when our motto is, "The world eats to live, in Louisiana we live to eat". I am a little obese myself and know the struggles about which I am preaching. Bottom line, kids (and adults) today are not healthy and do not do enough physical fitness. They either watch T.V. or play video games on the couch. I want to take this obsession with gaming and transfer it into an active lifestyle change. Dance dance revolution is the newest fad in the video gaming industry. Like any other playstation or xbox game it hooks up to a T.V., but unlike a traditional game, one does not use a hand held controller. This game makes you get up onto a sensor pad and press giant buttons with your feet to music (dancing) as you watch an animated character perform the same steps you are performing. Different songs have different speeds and tempos to allow for individual differences. In short it gets kids moving and they have a blast while exercising without realizing it. I would love to bring this into my physical education classes to motivate my students to MOVE. I feel from the above description you can visualize my entire class dancing to a cool beat and watching an animated character leading them, while I monitor, instruct, and smile knowing the difference your donation is making in Louisiana. The school in which I teach used to be very suburban, but urban sprawl and Katrina has invaded and our school population has exploded in the past three years. The materials needed for this come in kits called DDR (dance dance revolution) starter kits. These kits include two medal game pads, six practice game pads, DDR software, and a X-Box to run the software. This starter kit will allow 8 kids to participate on mats, but I will facilitate other student involement behind the game and practice mats by simulating a mat until more practice mats can be purchased at a later date. I really feel this would benefit the kids I teach and motivate them to move to become physically fit. Thank you for your time, love of education, and consideration of this proposal.
