Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are at a Title I school in Oklahoma City. We are a brand new middle school, placed in an old elementary school building. Most of our students are coming in with very little experience in fine arts and are excited to have this opportunity.
Our school seeks to combine a diverse population of student interests that provide a rich variety of experiences and worldviews.
Our school is home to students who come from a variety of races, academic abilities, and backgrounds. Approximately 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
My Project
Cleaning supplies, storage, & classroom essentials -- oh my! This project will help to start the school year with everything we need to make the dance classroom clean, safe, and stocked with essential supplies. This project will help us get cleaning supplies like disinfectant, dusters, and mirror cleaner. With the current situation, having enough cleaning supplies is crucial to having a safe year.
Some of our students lack the financial resources to maintain their school supplies through the year, and often are not prepared for the daily upkeep of personal hygiene that comes with being in middle school.
This is why I have added many essentials including pencils, staples, rubber bands, spray deodorant, band-aids, feminine hygiene products, and more to this list.
I have also included things specific to learning dance, like the speaker. My students love working in groups to choreograph their own dances, but I only have one big speaker. If they are in the same room, they cannot always hear their music. The speaker, audio cables and surge protector will help enhance the students' learning and create a space where students can collaborate and improve together.
There are also many items that will help the dance classroom become an efficient space that will also be able to showcase student work. Things like the paper trimmer, laminator and sheets, and step stool will help create projects and assignments quicker and put them on display for the students to see. The storage bins and wall backpack hangers will help to clear clutter and organize the dance costumes in a way that's easy for the students to find and to make sure they are staying in great condition for performances. I have also added some motivational posters to keep the dance room a positive space for students to learn
