This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm a teacher on the Southwest side of Chicago, in the Little Village neighborhood. I teach 6th grade and have 40+ students. My students are bilingual and are continuously acquiring English, considering that a large number are native Spanish speakers and are either new-comers to the US or from immigrant parents. My students also face social-economic struggles. Most of my students, about 99%, are from low income families and qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

I often use teaching strategies that support both second language and diverse learners who struggle greatly with reading comprehension.

I teach ELA, English Language Arts. We focus our time on reading a variety of genres.

My Project

My students are learning remotely and need quality books to read on a daily basis. These books will increase reading skills and will help promote a love for reading. Research shows, and I truly believe, that students get better at reading with practice.

The two sets of books that I'm requesting for my students, "The Circuit" and "Bud, Not Buddy", also allows them the opportunity to learn about identity in which they will learn about themselves and others.

The books will help me motivate my students to become avid readers.
