My Students
As a math teacher, I get to work with entire grade levels by co-teaching lessons and working with small groups of students. My students are extremely hard working and come into math with a positive attitude. I have worked to instill a growth mindset in my students. This has helped students be open to learning new content and trying new strategies. Despite any challenges students may be facing, they demonstrate perseverance and give their absolute best.
My students are a diverse group who are continuing to build number sense by participating in number talks at the start of every math lesson.
My students are more engaged and demonstrate a stronger understanding of the content when hands-on manipulatives or visuals are used. The students especially enjoy learning through inquiry, games, and working with peers.
My Project
Currently, we create our own math number talks to start each day. The Math Fluency Kit will come with created number talks for the entire year, as well as the manipulatives or visuals that are needed to complete the number talk. A number talk provides students opportunities to manipulate, discuss, and learn new strategies on how to work with numbers.
This kit will not only build students' fluency with addition and subtraction, but also require them to communicate with peers and teachers about their reasoning.
The visual tools that come in the fluency kit will also allow students at all levels to access the problems and make sense in a way that is best for them.
