Reading comes alive during Daily Five! Currently, my students are using a laptop that is on loan to us. They use it as they listen and read-along with Scholastic DVDs. They also use it when they go to Raz-Kids.com, an online reading program. We would love to have a laptop we could call our own.
My students are first graders in an urban school.
They are eager learners and they LOVE to read! We love Daily Five, and our reading has improved greatly this year because of Daily Five. We use computers for many things in our classroom, and we would like to have a laptop that we wouldn't have to share with other classrooms.
My Project
During Daily Five, my students move through 5 literacy activities: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. When my students are "reading to self", they have the option of reading a "good-fit" book, reading along with an interactive DVD, or reading a book on Raz-Kids.com which is an online leveled reading program. My students LOVE the DVDs and Raz-Kids! Currently, my students must be patient and wait for their turn to use the computer. We are borrowing a computer, and it would be so nice to have a laptop that would always be available to us. This laptop would also be used in whole group activities when it is connected to our classroom projector and document camera.
A classroom laptop would give my students another avenue to reading.
Many children do not have a computer at home, and the classroom computer is their only opportunity for extra, interactive reading activities. This laptop would be used by single students, pairs of students, and the entire class of students. A donation to this project will help my first graders increase their reading skills and further their love of reading. What could be better than that?
