Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We have an exceptional group of students, many of whom hail from Mexico or boast Mexican ancestry, with Spanish being the predominant language spoken at home. These students come from low-income Families, and their passion for exploring their cultural heritage is truly inspiring. Our project is designed specifically for my Spanish for heritage learners class, which delves into Spanish literacy and heritage exploration to help their reconnect and fully understand their identity and roots.
Our overarching goal is to craft an authentic Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar experience within our classroom.
To achieve this, we're seeking specific items, including Mexican Fiesta Party Supplies, Day of the Dead decorations, acrylic risers, and marigold garlands. Each of these elements will play a pivotal role in immersing our students in their Mexican heritage. We will delve into the symbolism and significance of these items during our class unit.
Our project aims to achieve the following:
1. Instill Cultural Pride: We aspire to instill a deep sense of pride in our students regarding their Mexican heritage. This will be accomplished through active participation in the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos.
2. Hands-On Learning: These requested resources will enable our students to actively engage in the process of constructing an authentic altar. This hands-on approach will enhance their understanding of the cultural importance and symbolism associated with each element.
3. Community Connection: Beyond academics, this project will serve as a means to unite our diverse student body. It will encourage them to share their family traditions and stories related to Día de los Muertos, fostering a sense of community.
