This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright, energetic and full of the right kind of potential. Unfortunately, they are also coming from a community that has too much blight, violence and poverty. They are constantly battling against circumstances that can lead to frustration, failure and fear.

These students must not let circumstances they can't control hinder their potential and growth as learners.

They want to be successful. They want to positively impact their futures. They want to learn. I want to provide them with every opportunity to be the students I know they can be.

My Project

It's ninth-grade year. A pandemic is raging, and you are stuck at home due to distance learning. Your teacher has just informed you that the class will be starting a novel. You are dreading the moldy-oldy text your teacher is bound to assign. But wait! What's this? A modern re-telling of Cinderella? With Cyborgs, and androids, and Moon people? And the whole thing takes place during a global pandemic?

Suddenly you think maybe reading a book for school won't be so bad.

For this extraordinary year, we have decided to focus on a text that is not only relevant to our students' experience but allows us to explore themes that are equally as relevant. Likewise, ensuring that each student has their very own copy of the book, will help to make the distance learning experience just a little bit more personal.
