it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching photography to students in a low-income area does not signify that they are unable to attain a higher degree of knowledge. I love the fact that my students do not give up until they've reached high GPAs. Teaching photography online during COVID has been a unique challenge.
Photography has been a great way for students to express their feelings through these trying times.
In order to keep the students interested, I had to think outside the box. With the inability to share equipment our Chromebooks became cameras and we found free editing software in place of Photoshop.
I am looking forward to teaching this year considering we will be able to be more hands-on. Watching the joy in students' faces after they've created an image makes me love my job even more.
My Project
Avi Kwa Ame is the ancestral land of over thirteen Yuman speaking tribes of the Mojave Desert. Students will produce cyanotype prints to generate awareness for the protection of this sacred land. Students will be able to apply a variety of academic disciplines to create the work. Using science, they will mix chemicals and prepare chemicals. They will research the history of the land and its use, not only by indigenous cultures but its mining and ranching use. Through continued research, they will collect quotes from those seeking protection in this area.
Students will create cyanotypes by combining quotes and imagery printed on transparency film, in addition to physical items such as plants and geology from Avi Kwa Ame.
Working in groups, we will create a variety of 20 x 30 cyanotype prints that will eventually be on display in three group exhibitions in 2022. Considering we will be using archival material, these prints should last more than two hundred years. Standards that are applied are AP EK 2.2B-VA: Artists improvise and explore the possibilities of particular techniques and processes and CTE 8.1.2: Select work and present appropriately in an exhibition
