Wilson Early College Academy (WECA) is a public high school located in Wilson, North
Carolina that offers mostly first generation college students and at-risk students an opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate's degree with no out of pocket expenses in four or five years.
WECA has been an immense success with most students graduating and going on to a four-year university. WECA's Science department has big ideas and very little funding available. Students lead funded projects to support scientific investigations into areas of interest so that they can learn as big as they can dream!
My students will get a head start in biology with these dissecting tools and specimens. It may inspire them to get a job involving biology in the future. This project would really teach them how to follow directions and work together. The students seem really interested in dissecting things and I think this is a good educational project for them to do.
In Their Own Words
I am hoping that this project will be enjoyable for me and my classmates. It will be a fun way to learn about animals and other biology stuff, like their anatomy. My fellow classmates and I are really interested in dissection at the moment. I hope this will help me, at the very least, with biology.
I will make the most of this leadership opportunity involved in creating this project by building responsibility among my classmates and me. We will also learn how to better follow directions so we can properly do this project. This project will strengthen the leadership, teamwork, and responsibility skills that we already have.
This project is really important to me and my school because we want to learn as much as possible. We really want to do this project because it's fun and it'll help us in future classes. My school really hopes that other students, teachers, and schools are inspired to do the same.
