This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I would describe a typical day in my classroom as organized chaos. There are usually three to four projects going on at one time. I design projects that get my students out of the classroom and problem solving on real-world issues.

I teach in an isolated agricultural community. The student population is diverse, consisting of Hispanics, Filipinos, Pacific Islanders, Chinese and Japanese. The students are eager to learn new things but have limited opportunities and resources. The school serves as the center for sports and community events.

My Project

Our school has not offered a drama class in over 15 years. The drama class has no costume inventory and as part of the drama curriculum students will learn how to design and sew costumes. A sewing machine is needed to make costumes for the students drama productions.

Students will gain valuable lifelong skills in how to operate a sewing machine and understand the construction of clothes.

Students will first research their idea for a costume, look at different patterns, fabrics, threads and materials. Students will be instructed on how to use a sewing machine and gain sewing techniques for period costumes and also street clothes.

Students will understand that not only acting but effective costumes will bring their character to life on stage. Students will also learn about costuming jobs in both the movie and theatrical industries.
