My Students

I teach music at a very small K-8 school. We have about 500 students all together. As the music teacher, I teach almost every student in the school at some point in their time here. With that said, I usually have 20-30+ kids at one time in my concrete and tile box of a classroom. So, it gets pretty loud in there. And, with the band kids, it gets loud enough for risks of hearing damage.

This project is about getting sound absorption materials for the classroom to mitigate as much of the reverberation and bring down the excess noise in the classroom.

By putting up acoustical foam, I can provide a more healthy environment for my students and their hearing. Plus, less reverberation = less echo = better tonal mixing = better band rehearsal = better music education. AND, my students probably won't yell so much because they're not fighting the echo of the room any more.

My Project

The foam in this project is attached to some scrap cardboard and then that is attached to the ceiling, walls, and corners of the classroom. When this is done, it will help cut out the extra reverb and echo from the classroom making it easier to hear within the classroom. Right now the only sound absorption materials in the classroom are three giant area rugs. These help a little, but I do work in a concrete block for a classroom. So, the rugs only cover the floor. Now, through this project, I am looking to help those rugs by putting up this foam on the walls and in the corners so that more of the excess noise is cancelled out leaving only the natural sounds. For example, at the end of the year when the rugs are rolled up and there is nothing to absorb any of the sound, anything above a whisper sounds like yelling because the sound is just bouncing around the room with nothing to catch it. That's where the foam comes into play. To catch the sound.

So, basically, the foam goes on the ceiling, walls, and in the corners to catch and muffle the echoes of the sounds bouncing off of the concrete walls in the classroom so that students can actually hear what they are playing, hear themselves talk, and hear their teacher talk without yelling.
