Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am privileged to work with a class full of bright, energetic second and third graders. At our school, I am able to work with the same class for two years in a row. This gives me the opportunity to really get to know my students well, learning what works best to help them learn. I have really enjoyed getting to know my students and look forward to continuing that process.
My students are eager to learn and can often be heard reminding each other to keep going when things get hard because that's when we "grow our brains".
The students in my class face difficulties of many kinds - economic, social, linguistic, academic, emotional, and more, but they overcome these to grow individually and as a class. A high percentage of students are learning English as their second language, but they still engage in class discussions eagerly and with confidence. Many of my students also struggle to stay focused on academic tasks throughout the day, but they try their best to remain focused even if the wiggles get to them here and there.
This class is going to succeed in life, and I'm privileged to walk with them.
My Project
I have a wide variety of students in my class, with a variety of strengths and needs. I would really like to challenge the students that need to be challenged and provide supplementary practice for those that need it in an engaging manner. Many of these students also struggle to work independently on pencil-paper tasks.
Allowing my students to access educational tools that are specific to their needs on an electronic platform will allow them to see themselves as successful independent learners, will help them to stay engaged in their learning, and will ensure that they are able to make the most of every minute of their school day.
We will use Amazon Fire tablets during our independent center time. Small groups of students will use these tablets to access specific apps to support phonics learning, math development, problem solving skills, and more. While these students are using pre-selected apps, other students will work on paper-pencil center activities, some will work on typing and reading skills on the computer, and others will receive small group reading instruction. All students will benefit from all types of instruction throughout the week.
