Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Art club is a space for our creative kids to come together, listen to music, and do arts and crafts. We do not have a formal arts program at our school because it is embedded within science and English classes. On Tuesdays from 4-5, I get to hang out with about 12 kids from 9-11th grade. Our kids come from low-income backgrounds and many of them find a respite from daily life in being creative. Holding this space for them has become a sacred part of my week.
My Project
I often ask my Art Club kids what they would want if we had access to any art supplies out there. Their most recent interest has been in stamp and print making materials. I remember carving my own rubber block when I was in middle school and I thought it was so fun to be able to make beautiful prints from my imagination. I want to give my kiddos the same experience I had and provide them with quality tools and materials to do it with. This is a unique ask from some unique kids!
