This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have an amazing group of 23 fully bilingual 5th graders. We are in an urban district where many of our students live at or below the poverty line. It can be difficult for the parents to buy students quality school supplies like the Expo dry-erase markers or the Ticonderoga pencils. These are considered to be luxury items for many students. Our classroom is also an escape for many students from their cramped apartments. Having the freedom to move around and be comfortable as they work is a welcomed delight for many.

My students love to move around the classroom during independent reading time, as well as group work math time.

Having these individual floor cushions makes it so that students can be comfortable working around the classroom and take a break from the hard desk chairs they have to sit in the majority of the time. The dry-erase markers and pencils will be used while they are around the classroom using the floor cushions. This means that all the students will be comfortable, prepared, and engaged to learn. The dry-erase markers will be used for whiteboard activities that we usually do during math time. The pencils will be used for all subjects and activities.

Comfort and materials to learn are just one piece of the puzzle to make the classroom a more inviting place to grow as a student and learn every day.
