This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of school. Parents struggle to provide them with the necessities to start the school year with and many students come to school without a pencil everyday. Even with these challenges my students come eager to learn. They are funny, smart, and active.
Many of them are currently on free or reduced lunch meaning they get help to pay for lunch everyday.
This never stops them from having a positive attitude. The moment they walk in my door is the opportunity to change their lives.
I can’t control what happens to them at home but I am able to control their school life. I do this by creating a safe, positive, and loving environment. They are faced with challenges everyday but never let you see it, they strive to give their best.
My Project
In my first year of 8th grade I struggled with the lack of curriculum my district has provided for me. I found myself on Teachers Pay Teachers spending way too much money to come up with something for my students do to that will match our standards. Many times I was lacking in literature and found my students were missing the key elements a piece of literature can bring.
The Units of Study by Heinemann will bring literature to life in my classroom.
It teaches our curriculum through novels and the study of different genres. Students will be able to feel the pleasure of finishing a great book while learning the standards for the year.
