I am a Math and Science Teacher at a small school located in a secured residential treatment facility for young women who are under state custody. Although we are a public school, with 50% of our population eligible for special education, our budget seems to run thin every year.
My goal is to turn these severely at risk students on to math and science. I try to provide as many exciting and interest grabbing math and science projects as I can. I am teaching out of a new, wonderful Physical Science curriculum; however, I do not have a lab or any supplies. My students are not allowed to leave the facility, so field trips are not an option. I recently asked for funds to bring a science demonstration to my student, but I was denied.
I believe that a subscription to Weekly Reader's Current Science will help make Science interesting and fun for my students. Aside from engaging my students, the magazine will provide up to date current events in science.
Using this magazine in addition to my curriculum has the potential for hundreds of quality teachable moments. Please help make this happen!!
