My students are a diverse group of kids representing many cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. They come from all over the city but primarily they live in the neighborhood around our school which is sandwiched between an airport and a large industrial park. Maintaining green space in this urban environment has been one of this community's goals and priorities. The students here are curious and motivated, they are willing to take healthy risks to expand their horizons, and they push each other to grow and learn.
My Project
My students have choices when it comes to the books they read in small group literature circles. Choice in literature is a great way to foster life-long readers but it requires faculty to be continually adding to the library. This takes money and resources that are hard to come by in public education right now.
My students are fascinated with books about hot topics like climate change and what is happening at the US/Mexico border.
Research shows that when students are reading books about topics they are interested in, their motivation increases. Please help me get these books into the hands of my students.
