My Students

Aloha! I have been teaching since 1997. The majority of my student population struggle when it comes to academics. I have a diverse group of students from all over the world, as I teach English learner students. These high school students want to become bilingual so they can be productive literate young adults once they graduate. Some students unfortunately come from below poverty level households and have a difficult time focusing in school.

Some of my students are amazing artists, singers, dancers, and creative writers.

At times they keep their talents and passions as a secret because some are hesitant and or cautious about sharing. Our high school is nestled on lava flats in Hawaii, so it is often very hot and humid in our classroom.

My Project

Considering the climate of the nation I want to provide my students with a digital subscription to the New York Times Upfront magazine. This magazine is an important resource for current events. Currently I am involved with Project Based Learning, and want to engage my students in U.S. history content.

Upfront provides great articles covering current issues impacting the United States today.

Since I created digital curriculum last year, I appreciate that Upfront is a paperless resource. Upfront magazine is written in a student friendly language and helps students to learn about current issues so they can develop opinions on what is going on in our country.
