it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a reading Intervention Specialist for students from Tk through 5th grade. Our school is located in an industrial inner city. My students are second language learners and come from predominantly low income families. Many of our students don't have access to current non-fiction reading material that is relevant to their interests and critical for reading success with the new Common Core Standards. This lack of material may cause a deficit in students critical thinking and comprehension skills that are needed to compete in todays increasingly complex society.
My Project
A subscription to Time for Kids will allow my students access to Non-Fiction reading material. Students across all grade levels struggle with understanding of complex non-fiction text. This subscription will give my students opportunity to explore Non-Ficition reading through current and interesting reading material that is relevant to their lives. In addition, Time For Kids will engage students and increase their ability to access non-fiction reading and improve their critical thinking skills. Students will be able to identify fact from fiction and examine the difference between persuasive writing and informational text. At the same time, they will increase their comprehension through the lens of historical events.
