My current 3rd graders live in a high-need community where they experience their own current events on a daily basis. Often they know only about their own community and things they experience on a daily basis. I would like to provide them with a tool that will give them exposure to events and topics they may not otherwise learn about.
I would like to teach my students more about the world outside of their community. We learn about the past in social studies but I feel it is important for them to know about everyday topics and events they may hear about on the news.
I would like to provide my students with a subscription to the Weekly Reader so they can spend some time each week reading about current events. Since a newspaper is often inappropriate for young students I need a resource they can both enjoy and understand.
You will make it possible for my student to learn about the world around them and topics that may interest them. You will be giving them a resource that they can utilize both in and out of school.
