This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello! For my fifth year of teaching I will be setting out on a new adventure in a fourth grade classroom! I will be looping up with some of my third grade students from this past school year. I teach in a Title I school community in West Harlem, NY. 98% of the population receives free lunch, and 27% are English as a new language learners (ENL).

My school building has very quickly become my second home, and my classroom has become my favorite room in the house because it's a place where I get to provide opportunities for my students to be heard, be seen, and be valued for who they are.

The varying needs and learning styles of my students are what make the school year so meaningful. I am committed to providing my students with multiple entry points and avenues to explore and investigate in the hopes of fostering a sense of life-long learning.

My Project

Integrating a magazine into the classroom will serve as a very powerful learning tool for my students. It will support non-fiction reading and writing units, expose my students to different writing styles, and serve as an avenue for classroom discussion.

These Scholastic News magazines will provide students the opportunity to explore current events, debate different topics, write essays using text evidence, and do close readings of articles independently and/or with a partner.

Lastly, exposure to these magazines shows students that reading does not only exist on the bookshelves of the library, but that reading is all around us and should be celebrated!
