I am teaching Third grade in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. Edgewater is an extremely diverse area and the students in my class are from various backgrounds making our class a melting pot of ethnicities. I teach Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, and a zillion life lessons a day.
My school has fairly old textbooks for Social Studies, and we do not have Science textbooks. I would love to get a class set of Time for Kids (TFK). It not only focuses on learning about the subjects previously mentioned, but also it does it in a way that is current to what is happening in the world.
As stated on the TFK website, "TIME For Kids is a weekly classroom news magazine packed with stories about world and national events, scientific discoveries, sports, entertainment, kids in the news and much more." TFK also has a section where kids my students' age report on stories from around the world. What a fabulous way to explain how writing can make an impact!
I was able to get my hands on a few of these fabulous magazines last year, from a fellow teacher in my building, and they would fly out of my classroom library into my students' hands. When I had conferences with students during independent reading time, the ones who were reading the magazines that day would have such enthusiasm as they described what they were learning. It was always a magical moment when a child would say, "Did you know..." and tell me something they had just learned and were so excited to share.
I would love to have a class set of these gems so that my entire class can have a chance to read them. I think they are a great way to encourage reading and also an exciting way to teach Science and Social Studies.
