This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My reading intervention classes are filled with bright, delightful young minds. Our school aims to bring our readers up to grade level in reading by the time they get to eighth grade. These tenacious young scholars have high goals for themselves as readers. They are eager to read books full of adventure and fantasy. The goal of this project is to provide them with vivid, engaging books that are appropriate for middle readers, as well as flexible seating options for them to use in their homes during reading time. This will enhance student engagement and focus, and lead to increased reading abilities among the kids in my class.

My Project

My students are several grade levels behind in reading. While audiobooks allow for them to listen, they often miss out on the tangible joy of holding a book that they can get lost in.

My students deserve to read relatable and accessible books in a quiet and comfortable space.

As students are reading at home, I selected noise cancelling headphones to help my students focus, as well as beanbag chairs to lounge on while reading. Students also will receive a lap tray, which they can use to read and write on while in their beanbag chair. I also selected two graphic novels, "The Crossover" and "New Kid", which are relatable and fun books that my students will love. These books will loosen the monotony of learning from home and make reading fun and exciting for my students. In the midst of this global pandemic, these books can be a refuge that grow young minds, unleash imagination, and provide a healthy escape from the stress of COVID-19 and distance learning.
