Curl Up With A Good Book

My students need 6 sets of books to create a leveled nonfiction classroom library. My students read on many different levels and a leveled library will help me meet all their needs.

My Students

Education is not one size fits all and my students are proof of that. In my 5th grade class I have students reading from the 3rd grade level up to 8th grade, yet their interest are the same. A set of leveled nonfiction books would help me meet the needs of all my students.

I teach in a Title One public school.

Many of my students have never left the state of Georgia or the city we live in. Some of my students are being raised by grandparents or other relatives. Because of this, they have had few experiences that can enhance their learning. My students come from homes with few books or other educational resources. Despite their backgrounds, my students are eager learners. Though many of my students are reading below grade level, they love reading nonfiction books. They especially like books about animals, biographies (especially sports figures), earthquakes and volcanoes or anything science related. I also have students reading above grade level and leveled nonfiction books would help me to challenge them.

My Project

I'm requesting a set of nonfiction leveled readers to help meet the needs of all my students. In my 5th grade class, I have students reading from a 3rd grade level up to 8th grade. With leveled readers, my struggling readers will be able to read about the same topics as the rest of the class. This will enable them to experience success and not get discouraged and give up. These leveled readers will also meet the needs of my other students by holding their interest and challenging them. These books will also help with behavior and motivation. Students who are engaged and challenged stay focused and don't have behavior issues. These books will not only help improve their reading skills but will enhance instruction across the curriculum in science and social studies. Good reading skills are so important. Good readers become life long learners. These books will also help my students next year and in years to come.

If my students leave elementary school with good reading skills, they are more likely to graduate and go onto college.

For many of them, they would be the first in their family to go to college. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. I was fortunate to be raised by parents who read and encouraged me to read and because of them I've always had a passion for reading. Help me pass this passion on to my students and create life long learners.
