My Project

My Students

My first graders are a diverse group of students who love learning!

They enter the room each day with an enthusiasm and energy that constantly remind me why I love what I do. My students come from many different cultures - each year, we use Google earth to zoom in on all the countries represented in our classroom-- it's usually more than 10! As a Title I school, we know that many of our students and families struggle financially; at our school, we do our best to make sure that our students and families are supported in every way possible so that every child can reach his or her full potential.

My Project

Do you know that feeling of curling up in a cozy space with a good book? It's wonderful! That's what I want for my first graders! These materials will help me to provide a warm, welcoming space for my students to do just that. The bright colored carpet will provide a comfortable space for students to sit and read, alone or with a partner. The beanbag chairs will be an extra treat for students to take turns sitting and reading their books. The book stand will provide a way to display all of the beautiful, diverse picture books that we are so fortunate to already have in our classroom; it will also allow students to browse these hardcover titles easily. In first grade, students may be just learning to read, but it's never too early to instill that love of books!
