Curl Up With A Good Book

My students need a loveseat couch and an armchair.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Eib's classroom raised $763

This project is fully funded

I teach special and regular education students in an inner-city high school. All of my students are in Corrective Reading and Math classes to make up for skill deficits.

I've been at this school for nine years. Students often stop by my room while running an errand for another teacher and ask, “What do you teach and can I stay?” They want to stay because I have a reading area set up. I've brought in an old chair and a bunch of cushions from a broken sofa. To me it looks pathetic, but they beg to be allowed to sit and read there.

I want a real couch and chair for my students. I know that learning to read well will make a huge impact on the rest of their lives. I also know that kids who struggle with reading need to feel successful and good about themselves while they are learning. I explain to them that when we read at home we don't sit in straight backed chairs at desks; we get comfortable. We flop on the couch or a bed to relax and enjoy reading. This is a foreign concept for them. They have reached high school and to them reading is like punishment instead of an opportunity to learn and open up new worlds. Having a special reading area allows me to work with one group of students while another group puts their new reading skills into practice. Our high school’s motto this year is “College.” My students say they are going to college, and I want to believe they will go and be successful, but I know without better reading skills they will struggle. I want to instill in my students a love for reading.

I've bought so many books for them to enjoy---now YOU can give my students a place to read that makes them WANT to read and lets them know that people care about them and their success in life. PS: The students helped pick out which couch and chair they thought looked comfortable and when I explained Donors Choose to them they got so excited. They already think you are AMAZING for helping them. Thank you so much!
