This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These first graders have endless questions about the world around them. They are fascinated by animals, mummies, space and how things work. We have many books on these topics in our classroom but they are not geared toward beginning readers. The few we have are coveted and we'll loved.

My students need books they can read on the science topics they are so fascinated by.

The national geographic books have beautiful engaging photographs, are written at 3 early reading levels and span a range of topics for students. Some of the topics are ones I know they are interested in, and some are new areas for them to explore. Each time a student discovers something amazing, they begin to share with their peers and the enthusiasm spreads throughout the class. These books will spark reading engagement, deepen their knowledge in science, and help them learn to communicate with academic language.

The other materials in this project focus on exploration and engineering. My students need materials to engage them in thinking like scientists. First graders need to try things, feel things and build things to truly know and understand topics. Watching a video or reading a book is a great introduction but building materials will bring these concepts to life.
