My Students

Environment is everything. It affects how we view the world around us, and how others view us. Part of my job as a teacher is to create an environment in which all of my students can grow- as individuals and as learners. The challenge facing my students is having enough workspace around the room.

My students are ambitious learners.

When curiosity comes knocking at the door, there is little that holds them back from answering. They attend an inner city school in North Carolina, in a neighborhood that is lacking a positive atmosphere. Most of my students are on free and reduced lunch, meaning that the families they come from struggle with providing the necessary means as far as food and clothes are concerned. While my students have limited resources outside of the school building, I want to make sure that I am able to provide as much for them while they are with me. This includes building their confidence as learners, which they lack; and building their confidence to be successful. One of the skills that my students need most is learning how to actually use the classroom respectfully and appropriately. It may seem like a basic skill, but necessary nonetheless. Without structure in the classroom, they have difficulty in focus and learning.

My Project

This is where I need your help! I am requesting four workstations and materials to supplement our science unit on Rocks and Minerals. The four workstations will provide structure in the classroom. These stations will be used in our daily routine, helping to create a successful learning environment. Most of my science instructional time includes rotations to different stations that address differentiated skills that the students need to learn and master. My students will be taught to use and see the stations as places to expand their knowledge, not just as tables in a room they go to everyday! With these tables, and the supplemental materials for the science unit on Rocks and Minerals, their lives will be changed for the better. Without the tables, the stations would be placed on the floor or would require the students to remain in their seats. But, with these tables and materials, I would be able to set up learning centers that my students could get up, move to and learn!

This is the bottom line.
