This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Although my students are hard working they often lack monetary resources for snacks to hold them over between meals. Often when fighting the struggles of the MTA just to get to school their meals are skipped and/or poor choices made. I want more for my students.
Providing a small snacks in the classroom provides many benefits, including improving academic performance, attendance, engagement, and reducing hunger and food insecurity.
Sometimes lunch periods are hours away and my students need just a snack or two to make those hunger pangs go away until lunch time arrives. I also many students who stay after school to work on studies and activities. A small bite or two is just enough till dinner time comes around. Many of the students are living at or below the poverty line, whether at home or in temporary shelters. Families have no extra money for meals let alone that extra snacks teenagers need between so they can stay on track so whatever we can give them is greatly appreciated.
