This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
All of the students in my classroom have their own unique way of learning. The learning styles within the classroom range from kinesthetic to auditory to tactile. My students have special needs and require a 12-month school year to minimize regression of newly learned skills and concepts. We do our best to make summer school fun but, at times, our students can become frustrated that they have to attend school while siblings and peers enjoy their summers at the beach or sleeping late. I will be building a school based business to help my students learn business, vocational and money skills. The students will be taking orders, making ice-cream, tracking sales, and making purchases to help maintain the business. The proceeds generated will be used to purchase school supplies for our classroom.
My students are learning vocational and life skills through a school based business.
Soft serve ice cream would give my students something to look forward to each day and would bring a bit of summer fun to summer school. My students who are 5, 6, and 7 years old have limited language skills. Most communicate using picture exchange, communication devices, single words and gestures. Each child will be given a specific job while following the recipe. Each child will be encouraged to identify ingredients, request their turn, and follow a recipe using a visual schedule on their class' smart board. They learn to initiate with one another and have fun making and selling delicious ice-cream. The children will also experience the exchange of coins and bills when they buy and or sell the ice-cream. In doing so, they will learn the importance that people, things, and money have value. These concepts form the foundation for understanding the importance of spending, sharing, saving, and much more.
