My Students

I teach physical education/health education in a K-8 New York City School. Many students have been with the same students since kindergarten. Most of my students have younger siblings in the same school for which they help take care of after school. They not only have school responsibilities but have home responsibilities as well.

Help give my students the opportunity to learn a new activity which supports hand-eye coordination, increases levels of concentration, and increases self-esteem for all students.

My students are fully engaged when they learn through hands on activities. Many of my students lack the chance to get materials from home and rely on the school to provide supplies.

I am a physical education teacher and I love giving my students the resources and tools to be successful in their overall health and wellness. My students are creative, interested, and full of questions! I am truly lucky to have such a great group of students each year.

My Project

In our physical education department we have been rewriting out physical education curriculum to match the NYC Fitness-gram. We want to shy away from just teaching sport concepts and offer all students the chance to learn how to stay active and fit. In doing that we are creating activities around the 5 components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, body composition, flexibility, and muscular endurance.

Cup stacking is a sport that kids from all backgrounds and abilities can participate in.

Since it levels the playing field for all students it has been shown to increase self esteem in students. It also increases levels of concentration which is a key component when taking tests.

Sport cup stacking can be an individual or team sport. We plan to use this as a station when we are teaching the fitness components. It can be used to show hand eye coordination, target heart rate, and can increase motivation through individualized intrinsic motivation.
