Ms. Berg from Memphis TN is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a camcorder, digital light meters, electricity usage monitors, and digital infrared thermometer to enhance their experience as the schools green team.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Announcement, Announcement! "It's keen to go green!" Our school was chosen this school year to help the district go green by implementing a Green Team. Our Green Team is a group of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who diligently work to keep the entire school aware of energy wasting.
This group of students have been working tirelessly this year monitoring the classrooms and hallways to help keep our energy cost at its lowest.
The Green Team has spent several hours this year going to all of the rooms in the building taking an initial energy audit. This consisted of the students observing what they saw, taking the lighting levels, temperature, humidity, and giving recommendations on how to make the room more energy efficient. Also, each month the students complete an energy patrol checklist, which keeps us informed of who the energy hogs are. If the doors or windows are open or the lights are left on in an empty room, a "You've been hogged" sticker is placed on the teacher's door. The students enjoy going around and putting you've been hogged stickers on teachers' doors who are in violation. This gives them a sense of power and authority but it also teaches them to be more aware of how to not waste energy.
At the present time, we only have one set of the energy audit materials and it takes quite a bit of time to audit the entire building. This keeps the students out of the classroom for an extended period of the learning time. The students will use the ordered materials to cover more rooms quicker. The students will learn how to take averages of rooms temperature and the lighting. This is done by taking samples from 3 different spots around the the room and dividing the sum by 3. This will help to increase math skills. When students go on patrol to identify the energy violators and to do their energy preservation presentations, they can use the camcorder to record their findings and view themselves later in order to tighten up their presentation. Because students are not professional speakers, being able to see themselves will help them to improve their presentations. Also, the videotape of the students presentations can be used to help enhance those middle school students portfolios.
The donations will help our school in its endeavor to continue going green because the students will spend less time out of the classroom but still get the energy patrols completed.
Also, making monthly announcements over the intercom helps to keep the entire school focused on saving energy. Hopefully by implementing this project it will make students more conscience about how they use energy and help them conserve energy at their homes, as well.
