This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My co-teacher and I feel so lucky to teach such enthusiastic and excited learners who want to understand the world around them. Our students, who are primarily from Manhattan's Lower East Side, are learning about how people are similar and celebrating differences. We enjoy reading books as a class and having discussions about the world and how to make our community more equitable.
2nd graders are learning about how they can take social action and make a difference at any age.
My Project
After doing inventory of the texts that are currently in our classroom library, our students found that the majority of them don't reflect their own identities. Through much discussion, our students communicated with us that they would like to see books with characters of color, who live in urban settings and are reflective of their daily lives.
Our goal is to raise student engagement which will allow our students to think critically through questioning, book clubs, discussions, and exposure to multiple perspectives. We also hope this will increase stamina and instill a life long love of reading for our students.
