Culturally Responsive Literature to Improve Literacy

Help me give my students culturally responsive books that are representative of them and their experiences to boost their literacy levels.

My Project

When I look around my classroom, I see students of all cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, each bringing a specific set of skills and knowledge to the classroom daily. Therefore, the available literature should reflect who they are and help them build engagement.

Many of my students are currently reading below grade level, and incorporating literature in which they see themselves reflected can promote engagement and build curiosity that makes reading and learning more meaningful to them.

Additionally, many students have developed an aversion to reading because they cannot find reading materials to which they can connect or find interesting. As a result, I have incorporated independent reading into our daily routine to help students identify books or genres they enjoy. This time is sacred for my students because I aim to help students identify books of interest, facilitate a love of reading, and boost their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. Adding the requested books to the classroom library will be another step to achieving this goal and helping students build empathy as they learn about other cultures and experiences, find validation in their identities, and celebrate the diversity within the classroom.

Finally, as our district transitions to full inclusion, it is only appropriate for students to have equitable access to reading materials that will expose them to engaging and relevant literature. Our students deserve these small but impactful opportunities to become immersed in literature with which they can connect while building transferrable critical thinking skills as they progress to becoming life-long learners.
