Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a resilient group of young people. They are strong advocates and facilitators of their learning. Together we are cultivating an equitable learning environment where everyone is a teacher and everyone is learner.
Every day we are one step closer!
My Project
I teach a Culturally Responsive Mexican-American Perspective English class at our school. The students in my classroom are students from all different walks of life that have found community within the classroom. Through literature we explore our identities, our traditions and cultures, and build our community. Our class is rooted in culturally responsive content and literature- in hopes of giving our students access to a learning that is designed for them. Mexican Whiteboy is a book by Matt de la Pena that follows the story of Danny, a young biracial boy.
Through his story we learn about friendship, healing, and coming to terms with our identity.
It deals with themes of masculinity, families, healing, loss, and trauma. Students in the past, have loved this story and have identified with Danny in many ways.
My hope is that through this project, every student will get their own copy of Mexican Whiteboy. Making culturally responsive literature accessible to students, can change lives.
