Culturally Responsive Kindergarten

Help me give my students inclusive classroom materials. Students will need to see themselves in the books they read, art projects they create, and in tools to manage their big feelings.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in southeast San Diego, CA. I have a high number of English language learners and an ethnically diverse population with Filipino, Hispanic, and African American students. Transitional Kindergarten and kindergarten is the first school experience for most of my students. Their favorite things to do are to build, pretend play, do art projects, and explore the world around them. They are full of energy! They have a love of learning and endless curiosity about their world.

My Project

It is so important that my students see diverse characters in the stories they hear. I feel that seeing a broad range of characters helps children to be more empathetic and kind. I want to make sure my students know the importance of hearing, seeing, and understanding a variety of stories.

Children need to see themselves reflected throughout the classroom.

This includes being able to create art that looks like them. More inclusive art supplies will give my students the opportunity to see that all skin colors are beautiful and deserve to be celebrated through art.

I also think it is important to include diverse dolls that will allow my students to explore and manage their strong feelings. Since they are living through a pandemic, all of my students have experienced some form of trauma and these dolls and stones will give them tools to process these big emotions.
