Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The second-grade students at my school are enthusiastic learners who are filled with curiosity. They are highly energetic and active learners.
Students need culturally responsive literature where they can see themselves to empower them as readers!
Our job as educators is to be aware of culturally relevant literature and to make it available to their students. Every school year I have the privilege of having all or most of English language learners on second grade. Among this population of students we tend to have a diverse group of cultures such as Arabic, Haitian, Hispanic just to name a few.
All students regardless of their culture need exposure to diversity.
Books that are used for read-aloud and student reading should reflect multicultural experiences that validate for students their worth and value at school and in society. Students also need exposure to books that will help them understand the multicultural nature of the world they live in.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
