Culturally Relevant Reading

My students need culturally relevant books like Sylvia and Aki to read that will teach them ways minorities overcame struggles in education so they can take pride in their schooling.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

By the end of the school year, I want students to feel like their time in my class was worthwhile and that they not only learned how to write an essay or tell about ancient cultures; I want students to feel valued and to understand more about who they are.

My students are enthusiastic learners who take pride in their culture and love working together.

They work hard to meet high expectations and make learning (and teaching) a joyful act. In class we have recognized the fact that minorities have largely been excluded from mainstream educational text in both English and History. Despite this, my school attempts to validate the experiences of our students in a variety of ways, largely because students crave knowledge about their own culture.

My Project

My students will use "Sylvia and Aki" to participate in Literature Circles where they will go beyond comprehension questions and discuss major themes of identity, segregation, citizenship, and education. "Sylvia and Aki" will be used as an anchor text to explore their own identity and the most important history of all--his or her family history. It will provide students with a powerful experience to blend school and home life and to learn more about individual rights.

Reading "Sylvia and Aki" will validate my students cultural roots and allow me as a teacher to share a story that I too have a personal connection to.

It will allow me to teach passionately and for students to learn about topics in which they are passionate about. This novel will bring to light minority lives throughout history and how to productively advocate for change. This novel will extend the walls of my class as my students teach the value of education to elementary students on campus.
